Want to immerse yourself in Swiss culture and understand the dialect you hear around you on a day-to-day basis? Our Swiss German course will demystify the idiosyncrasies of Swiss German and help you to cope with everyday situations. The focus is on the spoken language.

Study time: Ideally, you will practise the new vocabulary regularly between classes.

With our classroom-based courses, you and your fellow students enjoy in-person teaching at an Academia school in your region. The timetable remains the same throughout. Your teacher is highly qualified and will ensure that lessons are varied and fun.

Requirements

To register for this course, you must already have level B1 German. Take our online placement test to check that you meet the requirements.

Objectives

B1 – Pre-intermediate

By the end of this level B1 course, you will be able to understand the main points if clear, standard speech is used and the topic is a familiar one, regularly encountered at work, school, in your leisure activities, etc. You will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You will be able to express yourself in simple and coherent terms on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. You will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and to give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

On completing this course, you have a choice of options if you wish to continue to improve or consolidate your language skills.

Ideal for

  • Anyone who is interested in being able to communicate in Swiss German
  • Anyone who enjoys face-to-face learning and feels more comfortable if they are able to see gestures and body language in person
  • Anyone who likes learning as part of a class

Special

You will learn the dialect of the region in which the school is located. In Visp, for example, this will be Walser German.

We provide daytime childcare during classes at our Aarau, Basel, Dübendorf and Winterthur schools.
